The Bargersville Police Department's Tesla fleet continues to grow. Another Tesla Model Y entered service, now used as a vehicle for a K-9 unit.

The Bargersville, Indiana Police Department has purchased their tenth vehicle from Tesla. Model Y was refitted to accommodate a K-9 unit. The cage for the police dog, whose name is Dax, has been designed to open with the door, making it easier and faster to release him when required. Todd Bertram, Chief Of Police at Bargersville PD, shared photos on his LinkedIn (via Teslamag). Notably, Dog Mode is a feature of Tesla cars that makes them ideal as a vehicle for K9 units, which could be adopted by other police departments in the world. The Bargersville PD is currently the first in the world to use a Tesla vehicle for this purpose.

Bargersville PD has been a longtime supporter of Tesla's electric vehicles. It first purchased a Tesla Model 3 in 2019. The main motivation for the purchase was savings. In 2020, Bertram said:

“Two big things that we were looking at when shopping for cars were obviously cost and performance. Many times when you get a car that is in our cost price range, you sacrifice performance. With Tesla, the performance is better than the cars we are currently driving. It's amazing, it's smooth, it's powerful, it handles great.”

This was the beginning of a story about how the police department has become more efficient, cost-effective, and committed to the environment. Subsequently, over the past three years, Bargersville PD has acquired nine more Tesla vehicles. At the moment, it owns five Model 3s and five Model Ys.
