SpaceX founder Elon Musk and T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert will announce plans to 'increase connectivity.' SpaceX operates the world's largest broadband satellite constellation, Starlink, that already provides high-speed internet across 37 countries. The companies did not reveal any details about the partnership. Musk only said that the upcoming SpaceX and T-Mobile announcement will be "something special," suggesting it is a major deal for the aerospace company. It is speculated that SpaceX and T-Mobile might plan to collaborate to increase mobile internet connectivity with Starlink satellites and T-Mobile's 5G cellular infrastructure. Musk and Sievert will meet at the Starbase facility in South Texas to announce their future plans, the presentation will be live streamed via YouTube at 7:00 p.m. CT (video linked below).
Since 2019, SpaceX has launched over 3,000 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit and has amassed over 500,000 subscribers. The internet-beaming satellites provide low-latency data to pizza-sized user terminal antennas. The service is ideal for rural and remote regions where internet service is unreliable or completely unavailable because Starlink is very easy to install. The antenna just needs an electricity source and a clear view of the sky. It is also more affordable than setting up expensive fiber-optic cable infrastructures in remote communities.
SpaceX rolled out Starlink mobile service to connect sea-going vessels, airplanes, and RVs in June. SpaceX's partnership with T-Mobile suggests the companies could potentially collaborate to enhance internet communications' mobility by using T-Mobile ground infrastructures and SpaceX’s Starlink satellites. We will find out more details about the partnership tomorrow, Thursday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. Central Time [upcoming livestream video is linked below].
