Tesla's first location to house a service center and showroom in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas will open early next year. After months of secrecy, the news was revealed by Brownsville Mayor, Trey Mendez. He wrote on Facebook that Tesla will house the 14,000-square-foot facility, and the campaign's choice of their city underlines that Brownsville is undoubtedly the innovative capital of the Rio Grande Valley.
"After several months of secrecy, we can finally reveal that we are getting a Tesla location in Brownsville. It is a 14,000 SF facility with a service area and showroom. This is another exciting project for us, and shows that Brownsville is undoubtedly the innovation capital of the RGV."
Tesla Center will be located on the southbound frontage road of Interstate 69 E, just north of the Brownsville Sports Park. The 14,234-square-foot facility will feature a 1,925-square-foot service area and 2,309-square-foot business area, including 1,425 square feet of showroom space, according to the Brownsville Herald.
“We’re super excited,” said retail and redevelopment manager for the city of Brownsville Connie Miner. "We are going to be the first in the (Rio Grande Valley), and it’s going to be a huge win for Brownsville to welcome them here first."
Discussion of the deal began in September 2019. “We signed in September 2020,” said certified commercial real estate broker with Brownsville-based ICO Real Estate Advisors Alejandro Garza. "It took a full year to come full circle."
Tesla was looking for a building that would be located on the I-69E frontage road, but offers from this area were very limited. When the company began looking for options, the construction of the building it eventually housed was just beginning. According to Garza, Tesla is expected to open in January or February.
Garza also said that he believes Tesla's location is an early example of SpaceX's domino effect on the economy. “They’re bringing in more investment, more jobs and more eyes on Brownsville,” he said.
