Tesla Giga Shanghai will soon begin mass production of the Chinese-made Model Y. On the official website of the company, the estimated production start date is indicated as the beginning of 2021. Meanwhile, test cars have already been spotted many times both nearby and at the factory territory.
The Giga Shanghai-made Model Y is increasingly seen on test tracks. They are also seen driving near Phase 2, checking the vehicle's performance. Apparently, the factory has already entered the production stage. WU WA/YouTube spotted over 40 Model Ys parked in Giga Shanghai. 40 cars were covered with protective covers, and four more should be covered soon by workers.
At the moment, there have been no reports yet that order holders in China should prepare to receive their Model Y. Therefore, these spotted Model Ys are not likely first headed to customers. Furthermore, Tesmanian sources have now said that China-made Model Y will be on display in Tesla's Chinese stores as early as January 2021. It seems that at least some of these samples will be headed there.
With the launch of Model Y sales in China in 2021, it seems quite realistic that Tesla could surpass the production capacity of one million vehicles in 2021. Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai plans to produce about 550,000 EVs in 2021, including 300,000 Model 3s and 250,000 Model Ys. Tesla Gigafactory has issued ordering requirements to core component suppliers, people familiar with the matter told Tesmanian.
