Tesla Cybertruck Will Have Plaid Mode For Max Acceleration

Elon Musk hinted that the Tesla Cybertruck would have Plaid Mode for max acceleration. Thus far, the only Tesla cars expected to have Plaid Mode were the Model S and next-gen Roadster.

Elon Musk dropped a hint about Tesla’s Plaid Cybertruck in a tweet from Tesla’s Pope of Muskanity—whose name is a play on the idea that TSLA supporters act like a cult. The Tesla pope posed a difficult puzzle in his tweet, asking how he could convince his lady to agree to a Cybertruck.

The Tesla CEO quickly replied to the Pope of Muskanity, tweeting, “You may return the vehicle for a full refund in the unlikely event that it causes domestic discord.” He also replied to @Sofiaan’s tweet, saying: “Plaid Cybertruck is what I will drive.”

A Plaid Cybertruck hasn’t been mentioned by Tesla or Elon Musk before, so the news surprised many people. Plaid Mode will most likely be available for the Cybertruck’s tri-motor variant.

Initially, the CYBRTRK’s tri-motor variant was scheduled to enter production in late 2022, after the single-motor and dual-motor variants start production in 2021. However, a few weeks after the Cybertruck unveiling, Tesla moved up its tri-motor schedule to late 2021 alongside the dual-motor option and delayed the production of the single-motor Cybertruck to late 2022.

Many speculated that the schedule change was caused by stronger demand for the tri-motor and dual-motor variants. The new production date for the tri-motor Cybertruck will come at the heels of the Plaid Model S production, expected to start later this year. By the time Tesla has moved to assemble the Plaid Cybertruck, it would have enough experience from the Plaid Model S.

Plaid Mode has been strongly associated with the Tesla Model S in recent years. Although, it was initially introduced with the next-generation Roadster in November 2017, during the Tesla Semi unveiling.

Tesla’s Plaid Model S was first sighted on the Nürburgring race track in 2019. The updated Model S impressed Tesla supporters when it beat the Porsche Taycan’s time. It dispelled the myth that Tesla cars were only good for the drag strip, but not optimized for the race track.

Based on its results at Nürburgring, the Plaid Model S can maintain a consistent performance. So, it would be interesting to see the performance of a Plaid Cybertruck. During the CYBRTRK’s unveiling, Elon Musk claimed that Tesla’s all-electric tri-motor pickup could run 0-60mph in just 2.9 seconds, beating the time of a Porsche 911.

It is unclear whether the Cybertruck’s 2.9-second time for a 0-60mph run was with Plaid Mode or not. If it wasn’t, Tesla’s Plaid CYBRTRK would indeed be a beast of a pickup truck.
