The City of Venice, Florida, has purchased three Tesla Model 3s to test them for use in various departments, the Herald-Tribune reports. The carms will be mainly tested in order to understand how economical they are. The city knows that the bulk of the savings come from significantly lower charging and maintenance costs, but they want to estimate this in terms of their own use.
One of the vehicles, a Model 3 Performance, was converted into a cruiser for police service. It will be used to patrol the streets of the city. The other, a rear-wheel drive Model 3, will be used in the utility division. This will include day-to-day tasks such as administrative travel, customer visits in need of technical support, and meter readings. The third Model 3, which is also a rear-wheel drive version, will be used in the Building division. The car will be used for trips to inspect buildings.
All vehicles are used frequently and will be able to provide full savings information compared to their petrol counterparts. The vehicles will be tested over a period of 12 months to determine if they are well suited to a particular area and its needs. Such a timeline will also help them better understand not only the costs of charging but also the costs of maintenance, which can potentially appear only after some time of using cars. If the test results satisfy the city authorities, more electric vehicles will likely be purchased.
