Tesla's assertiveness and risk-taking in building its Giga Berlin are now being replicated by other projects in Germany. Tesla has been a great example for others—boosting the state's economy while growing as fast as planned, says Jörg Steinbach.

Tesla started production at Giga Berlin in March 2022 and has become a great role model for other companies and an example of how eastern Germany is re-industrializing, said Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy Jörg Steinbach in an interview with The Parliament. According to the Minister, Tesla has several effects on East Germany as a business location. The factory is now the largest industrial employer in Brandenburg, and it is planned that Tesla will also become the largest training company, as it offers programs for student training and internships at the factory. The effect this brings is “huge” for the regional economy, and now, potential investors around the world are considering Brandenburg when planning for possible business expansion.

Tesla's development in Brandenburg is on schedule, Steinbach said. Giga Berlin has been running two shifts since May, with a third shift planned for later this year. Tesla provides thousands of jobs while attracting skilled workers even from other countries. This is a positive effect, as it means that Brandenburg is a friendly state for skilled immigration, which is an important indicator in the international arena.

Tesla's path to this success was not easy, as it had to deal with local bureaucracy. However, it should be kept in mind that the period in which Giga Berlin was built and put into operation is unique in Germany. This was made possible by the company taking on the risk of building on preliminary approvals without waiting for final approval, which is permitted by law. In turn, the state organized a working group, which contributed to the rapid resolution of the approval issue.

“Repeating Tesla's pace for large projects will only happen if investors are as willing as Tesla to work at their own risk. This is the only way a short time planning and construction phase is possible,” said Steinbach. He also said that Tesla's experience is already being copied. For example, liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals will be built near the North Sea following the same pattern of claims as Giga Berlin. Saxony-Anhalt also adopted this model for the implementation of the Intel Chip Center in Magdeburg.
