Tesla is now offering Model Y to its customers in the US at a more affordable price. The car can now be purchased for less than $36,500, thanks to a $7,500 incentive, and even lower in some states that offer incentives for purchasing electric vehicles.
Tesla has updated the Model Y page with a new option for US buyers. The company now offers a rear-wheel drive (RWD) Model Y that is cheaper than other available options. The total cost of the car before any discounts is $43,990. This version replaces the recently discontinued all-wheel drive (AWD) Model Y. It is also $3,750 cheaper than AWD. With the full $7,500 federal tax credit, the crossover could cost just $36,490. Additional rebates may also apply in various states that encourage the purchase of electric vehicles.
At the moment, there are no details about the battery of the Model Y. The car may use lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which are cheaper to produce than nickel batteries. Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries are more efficient and have a much longer lifespan than nickel batteries. The RWD Model Y's range is 260 miles, which is lower than the discontinued AWD Model Y's, which had a range of 279 miles.
The RWD Model Y can reach speeds of up to 135 mph and accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Tesla says it will begin delivering the new electric vehicle in October. This means that production of the new version has already begun. This also indicates that the production shutdown at Giga Texas in Q3 may have been related to the retooling of the production line to produce the RWD Model Y.
