Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car in Norway in December, setting a new sales record. The compact SUV also became the best-selling car in the country in 2022.
When Elon Musk said that Model Y would become the best-selling car in the world, he was not joking, but relied on calculation. The compact SUV packs all the characteristics that a lot of consumers love, so it is only a matter of time before it outnumbers the 2021 winner, Toyota Corolla. In fact, it only depends on how quickly Tesla can increase production of Model Y so that the number of cars produced can exceed the number of Corollas sold. In 2022, this was not yet possible, but 2023 will most likely bring this victory. Auto sales figures worldwide for 2022 are not yet available and will be available in the coming months. However, it is already possible to access sales data in some countries right now.
EU-EVs updates sales data in real time as it becomes available for each country. The sales figures for Norway are immediately available, although the actual data may differ by several units, which should be taken into account when evaluating. According to available data, Tesla Model Y became the best-selling car in the country in December, registering 4,518 units, more than double the sales of its nearest competitor. Volkswagen ID.4 is far behind in second place with 2,027 units sold. In third place is Volvo XC40 with 1823 units.
It should be noted that according to teslastats, which also adds sales data but specifically for Tesla vehicles, 4,614 Model Y were sold in Norway in December. This is about 100 vehicles more than the EU-EVs data show, although it does not actually change the overall picture. December was the month with the most Model Y sales for the entire year in the country.
The cumulative data collected by EU-EVs show that Tesla Model Y also became the best-selling car in Norway in 2022. For 12 months of the year, 17,342 cars were registered, which was a new record for the number of registered cars of one model in one year. The record was previously held by Volkswagen Beetle, which registered 16,699 units in 1969. In second place, with a gap of more than 6,000 units, is Volkswagen ID.4 with 11,339 units. In third place, according to the results of the year, is Škoda Enyaq with 7,384 units.
