On January 7, 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk attended the Made-in-China Model 3 delivery event at Gigafactory Shanghai. The same day, Tesla China held its Model Y Program Opening Ceremony.
Recently, one of our readers in China sent us some very exciting pictures of a Model Y (test vehicle) being transported via flatbed. It was spotted on a highway in the city of Yancheng. We don't have evidence to confirm whether this Model Y was made at Giga Shanghai or imported from the US.
Tesla China officially opened ordering for the MIC Model Y around beginning of June. According to Tesla's website, Chinese customers can now order made-in China Model Y. Estimated delivery time is early 2021--so, production is also expected to start by early 2021. The price of the Long Range is ¥ 488,000 ($ 68,580), and Performance will cost Chinese consumers ¥ 535,000 ($ 75,185).
Based on the progress of Giga Shanghai Phase 2 construction, the Tesla China team is at least on target to meet their early 2021 delivery goal. But will the EV maker surprise us yet again, beating its own timeline? It certainly seems possible.
