Tesla Model Y remains China's best-selling premium SUV in the four months of 2022. A particularly significant achievement is that the car won the title even after a dramatic decline in sales in April.
April proved to be a difficult month for Tesla in China. Giga Shanghai is at the center of a new COVID-19 outbreak as Shanghai has been one of the most affected cities. For three weeks, 19 days of which fell in April, the factory completely stopped production, which, as expected, had a very negative impact on productivity. Despite the extremely difficult situation, Tesla was able to produce almost 11,000 cars in April.
In April, Model Y sales in China were 960 units, down 98 percent from March's 39,730 units. However, even with such low numbers, the car firmly holds the lead in the premium SUV segment. Competitors will have to try very hard to even catch up with Model Y.
Tesla Model Y retail sales in China from January to April were 75,641 units, up 246.5% from 22,829 units a year ago, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This placed Model Y in first place among premium SUVs with a starting price of over $44,610.
Tesla's compact SUV far outpaced Mercedes-Benz GLC, which came in second place with just 53,946 units. BMW X3 came in third with 47,292 units sold in the four months of 2022, down 6.5% from the same period last year. Audi Q5 finished fourth with 41,189 units. Li ONE by Li Auto ranked fifth with 35,883 units.
