Tesla Model Y debuts as part of a pilot program with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The vehicle is leased from West Shore RCMP. If the tests are successful, the RCMP will consider buying a vehicle from Tesla.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) continues to test its Tesla Model Y police cruiser. This time, the electric SUV is being tested in the city of Richmond in British Columbia's Lower Mainland, according to Richmond News (via Tesla North). The RCMP team advertised their Model Y on Twitter, indicating that they probably liked the car.
“Hey @elonmusk have you heard? Mounties in Canada are chasing criminals in fully marked, operational police EVs, including this one,” said the Richmond RCMP last week.

The Tesla Model Y is on loan from West Shore RCMP. There, the car made its first debut on Vancouver Island in February. The electric car is equipped with RCMP logos, as well as all the needed equipment.
“This is the first ever fully-electric RCMP police vehicle and we're proud to be piloting it here in the West Shore detachment. Our geography and mild winter weather make this an ideal test environment,” said in February Todd Preston, Superintendent in Charge of the West Shore RCMP.
After the tests are completed, the police will decide whether to buy an electric car. However, at the moment it has not been decided what manufacturer, model, and even body type it will be.
“Whether the next phase will involve a Tesla or another brand of EV, and the configuration (ie. Sedan, SUV or Pickup), has yet to be determined,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson, Richmond RCMP spokesperson. “So far the public reaction in Richmond has been mostly very positive,” he added.
