The recently launched sales of the Tesla Model Y in South Korea were a big surprise. The electric compact SUV became the best-selling foreign car in the country in May, surpassing the sales of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which held that spot throughout 2021.

Tesla registered 3,461 Model Ys in South Korea in May, dethroning longtime favorite Mercedes-Benz E-Class from the top spot, according to data provided by CarIsYou. Thus, the newly introduced electric car in the country's market became the best-selling imported car in May. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which registered 2,387 vehicles, lags behind by a significant 1,074 units.

South Korea is a fast-growing market for Tesla, which is reflected in growing sales, and Koreans' strong interest in Model Y underscores this. Tesla opened the Model Y order configurator in the country in mid-February 2021 and the first deliveries took place last month, earlier than expected. The estimated delivery times were previously listed as the second half of 2021, but they appear to have been accelerated, which delighted local customers.

In 2020, South Koreans showed great interest in Tesla vehicles. The manufacturer's sales in the country were up almost fivefold from the previous year, reflecting widespread brand recognition. The launch of Model Y in the country's market was a very good strategic move.
