Tesla Model Y became the top-selling premium compact SUV in Europe in 1H 2022. The car's success guaranteed it victory over Mercedes-Benz GLC.
In the first half of 2022, Tesla Model Y became the best-selling mid-size premium SUV in Europe, surpassing Mercedes-Benz GLC, according to Dataforce's preliminary half-year data released by Automotive News. The Texas-based manufacturer registered an impressive 41,851, even as the company’s main export hub, Giga Shanghai, faced a three-week production shutdown in April. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz GLC was able to register 40,554 units. This lag occurred even against the backdrop of a relatively weak Q2 for Tesla, when Model Y deliveries to Europe dropped dramatically.
BMW X3 finished third with 31,138 units, registering a 7.5% decline. Volvo XC60 is in fourth place with 27,836, down 18%. Audi Q5, in fifth place with 15,552 units, registered a 34% decline.
Tesla is registering a steady increase in Model Y sales, and the increase in Giga Shanghai production capacity that occurred after the upgrade will give a big boost in the second half of the year. According to data analysis, Model Y could overtake Audi A3 in the near future to become the best-selling premium car in Europe.
