Tesla Model Y and Model 3 were the absolute top sellers in California in the first half of 2022. The dominance of Tesla vehicles shows the strong desire of people to own an environmentally friendly and intelligent vehicle with superior performance.
California is the largest and most competitive auto market in the US and Tesla is well positioned there. Tesla Model Y became the state's best-selling vehicle in the first half of 2022, with 42,320 vehicle registrations, according to the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA). Model 3 became the second best-selling car in California with 38,993 units sold, further highlighting the growing demand for the company's electric vehicles in the state. The brand registered an 82% increase compared to the same period last year.
As Tesla continued to saturate the California auto market with its cars, new registrations of Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, and Corolla, formerly the state's best-selling cars, suffered from inventory shortages. Tesla cars outsold absolutely all other car models, even gasoline ones.
Toyota RAV4 finished in third place with 31,599 vehicles sold. In fourth place is the Toyota Camry with 28,745 registrations. Closing out the top 5 is Toyota Corolla with 22,391 cars sold. The results show a very significant lag behind Model Y and Model 3, which will continue to widen as Tesla further ramps up production in the US.
Today, the Fremont factory is the main manufacturing hub for North America. The facility is also the largest automaker in the US, which is a huge achievement as the factory only started operations in late 2010 with 1,000 employees. However, once Giga Texas reaches full production capacity, the flood of Tesla vehicles will simply be unstoppable.
