Tesla Model 3 & Y Enter Top 20 Best-Selling US Cars in 2021, Showing the Power of EVs

The electric vehicle revolution, led by Tesla, continues. Tesla Model Y and Model 3 entered the top 20 best-selling vehicles in the U.S. in 2021, becoming the first electric vehicles in history to ever achieve this.

Tesla's goal is to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy by moving away from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy. Electric vehicles are one of the key parts of this, which is why the company is particularly active in this area. While more and more companies are now starting to manufacture EVs, it's fair to say that Tesla is the one who spearheaded the EV revolution by creating compelling cars consumers really want.

Tesla vehicles are one of the most coveted today and the demand for them far exceeds the existing supply. The young company is actively trying to expand production with new Giga Texas and Giga Berlin and will soon be able to build even more EVs. Still, even with the currently restrained capacity, Tesla produced about 936,000 vehicles last year and has made great strides in the global automotive markets.

2021 was a turning point for Tesla in the U.S., as the company's cars entered the top 20 best-selling cars of the year. This marked the first time in history that EVs were able to achieve this and compete with ICE vehicles in the U.S. car market. Despite the false claims of GM's Mary Barra, who declared in early December that GM is the leader in the U.S.’ electric vehicle sector, the statistics show the real results of the companies.

While Tesla doesn't release model-by-model sales data, registration data can give an idea of ​​how many vehicles the manufacturer has sold. Troy Teslike/Twitter, which monitors Tesla's delivery data, has concluded that two of the manufacturer's vehicles are in the top 20 best-selling vehicles in the U.S. in 2021 based on the information he received.

According to his data, Tesla registered 186,575 Model Y, 150,654 Model 3, and 23,687 Model S/X vehicles. Based on the top 20 list of cars published by Reuters in early January (which does not include Tesla vehicles), now we can say that Tesla Model Y was ranked the 17th best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2021, while Model 3 ranked 19th. These results are a tipping point and hint that 2022 will be an even brighter year for EVs as their adoption reaches never-before-seen levels.
