In July, registrations for electric vehicles and hybrids rose 76% to 248,000 globally. Tesla Model 3 took 1st place in sales. And Model Y—despite just recently entering production—landed an impressive 3rd place.
The second half of the year is off to an electric start. How this progress will continue going forward in part depends on the trajectory of the pandemic, as well as any related financial stress or crisis that could follow. But so far, electric vehicles are showing a steady rise in popularity.
Tesla Model 3 is a global all-star with sales of 22,462 units. The number of Model 3s sold is more than double the runner-up, Renault Zoe, which was able to sell 9,410 units. Tesla's new model, Model Y, is already actively catching up with its big brother (in terms of age), Model 3. Having sold 7,540 units, Model Y was the 3rd best-selling electric car in the world in July, according to EV-Sales.

Model Y is ascending rapidly into the top sales figures, and with confidence. Most impressively, the vehicle has become the 3rd best-selling electric car in the world in just five months on the market. This information should give significant pause to anyone who ever doubted Model Y’s potential for success.
Model Y is sold in the ultra-popular and ultra-profitable midsize crossover segment. There is every reason to believe that, in the coming months, Model Y could become more popular than even the game-changing Model 3.
