Tesla Model 3 Is One of Most Reliable EVs on Market, per Consumer Reports

Tesla Model 3 is one of the most reliable EVs on the market, according to data compiled by Consumer Reports. Although the car was outperformed by the 2022 Kia EV6, the researchers note that Model 3 earned the title after being on the market for five years, while it is not known how the novelty will perform over the years.

Consumer Reports surveys collect performance, usage, and experience data from hundreds of thousands of vehicle owners. All of them are then used to predict the reliability of new models. This year, the data showed that Tesla and Nissan are truly reliable electric vehicles.

According to the results, Tesla Model 3 is the second most reliable new electric car you can buy. The car is outperformed by the new 2022 Kia EV6, but there is one catch. The result obtained cannot predict whether the new product will live up to the Model 3's proven performance over the years as it ages. Data from over a thousand Tesla Model 3 owners have shown that every model year since 2018 has either average or better reliability. In fact, Model 3 has been reliable for five years now, while it remains to be seen how Kia EV6 will perform in subsequent years of use. The third spot is taken by the second-generation Nissan Leaf.

The CR survey data showed that owners of new electric vehicles most frequently reported issues related to batteries, charging, electric motors, and unique heating and cooling systems. This, in part, may be due to the fact that companies are using new platforms for the production of electric vehicles, and the use of innovations can lead to new problems that simply did not exist before.

In addition, many of the latest EVs are designed and built by companies that have been building gasoline-powered vehicles for over 100 years, so they face a learning curve when it comes to building EVs. However, Tesla and Nissan have been mass-producing electric vehicles for more than a decade, giving them a distinct advantage over many competitors. While others grapple with the growing difficulties of change, long-running models like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model 3 have very few problems with batteries, electric motors, or charging.
