A Tesla Model 3 that crashed into a ferry terminal in Vancouver, Canada, accelerated due to the fault of the driver, the Police Department has said. The incident occurred in January 2023 and the version of the mechanical failure of the car was considered at first.

In January 2023, a Tesla Model 3 suddenly accelerated and crashed into the ramp of BC Ferries at the Horseshoe Bay terminal in West Vancouver, Canada. Initially, the police considered two versions of what happened: a mechanical breakdown of the car or the fault of the driver. The driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Four months later, the police ended their investigation and issued an official statement. The West Vancouver Police Department determined that the Tesla Model 3 was fully functional and did not cause the accident. Driver error caused the crash.

“Following an analysis of the vehicle data, the investigators determined the collision to be human-caused,” said West Vancouver Police spokesman Departmentsperson Sgt. Mark McLean, according to North Shores News.

Police said the 68-year-old driver, a Vancouver resident, was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention under the Motor Vehicle Act. McLean said that during the collision, the estimated damage to the ferry structure exceeded $30,000.

Some drivers around the world, after accidents, blame Tesla vehicles for sudden acceleration. A particularly large wave of such accusations came from China. However, to date, all such cases, which have already been fully investigated by the police, have shown that drivers were the cause of the accidents. Tesla cars have never been found to be the cause of the sudden acceleration.
