August was strong for Tesla in China. The popularity of the company's cars continues to grow along with the expansion of production facilities. Tesla Model 3 once again became the best selling EV in China.
Sales of passenger cars in China increased by 8.8% y-o-y in August. Wholesale sales of new-energy vehicles exceeded 100,000 units, up 43.7% on a yearly basis, per data from the China Passenger Car Association.
In August, Giga Shanghai was able to produce 12,714 Model 3, according to EVProbe. During the same period, the company was able to sell 11,811 units, according to the CPCA, making it the best selling EV in China.
Sales of the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV reached 9,150 units, thanks to a sharp increase in production, which propelled it to No. 2. GAC Aion S sold 4,071 vehicles, Great Wall ORA Black Cat (R1) - 3,748, and SAIC Baojun E-Series - 3,312, which earned them 3rd, 4th and 5th places respectively, according to EV-Sales Blog.

The Model 3's share of the electric vehicle market in China in 2020 reached 13%, which is almost equal to the combined share of its three closest competitors: BYD Qin Pro EV with 5%, GAC Aion S with 5% and SAIC Baojun E-Series with 4%. In the first eight months of 2020, an impressive 70,951 Model 3s were sold in the country.

With its robust sales, Model 3 is now the fourth best-selling car in the entire Chinese automotive market. And, Tesla in China could surprise with a very strong September, which would likely affect the overall bestseller list in the country.
