Tesla Model 3 became the second best-selling car, regardless of powertrain, in Germany in March 2022. The American manufacturer's electric car was only surpassed by the much more affordable VW Golf.

The German Federal Automobile Office (KBA) announced that the number of registered new passenger cars in March decreased by 17.5% compared to the previous year and amounted to 241,330 units. Sales of market leaders continue to decline, while Tesla sales continue to grow, compared to the same period last year. For example, in March 2022, VW sales were down 31.8% year-over-year. Sales of Mercedes decreased by 26.0%, Skoda by 27.4%, BMW by 15.5%, and Ford by 6.7%. But Tesla sales rose 117.3% from 3,703 to 8,045 units.

The Model Y produced at Giga Berlin also played an important role in the final figures. The factory made deliveries of the first 30 vehicles on March 22, after which Tesla delivered to several more delivery centers across the country. With the Model Y shipped from Giga Shanghai, sales of the model were 2,529 units. This brought Model Y to second place, behind Model 3, in the EV segment. Other vehicles such as Fiat 500e, BMW i3, and Hyundai Kona EV have registered fewer than 2,000 new registrations each.

Despite the general decline in sales in the German automotive market, Tesla is steadily gaining momentum, which demonstrates the high attractiveness of the brand. Tesla Model 3 became the second best-selling car in Germany in March, regardless of powertrain, registering 5,516 units. Ahead was only the VW Golf, which is considerably more affordable, with 7,564 new registrations.
