Tesla has increased the number of employees by 23% in 2022. The overall increase in employees has come in line with Elon Musk's announcement in June last year.

In 2022, the media actively discussed the situation with layoffs at Tesla, portraying Elon Musk as a villain who deprives people of their jobs. The beginning of this was an email sent by the CEO to the company's employees in June 2022, in which he talked about the optimization of the company's operations. While the email did contain information that some employees would be laid off, it was quite clear that the overall headcount of the company would grow.

Musk wrote that the staff would be cut in “overstaffed” areas. Obviously, Tesla has clear priorities and does not want to support those operations that do not benefit it at the moment. Musk stressed that the reduction would not affect those workers who are employed in manufacturing, such as producing cars and batteries. It also would not affect those who install solar. Tesla's CEO wrote in no uncertain terms that the company's hourly headcount would increase, confirming his statement later publicly on Twitter.

In accordance with explanations in the email, the company's 2022 data disclosed in its 10-K filing with the SEC confirmed Musk's statement in June. The company ended 2022 with 127,855 employees worldwide, up 28,565 employees from the company's 99,290 employees at the end of 2021. This reflects a 23% year-on-year growth and highlights Tesla's contribution to the global economy, despite the challenging macroeconomic conditions that were present in the market in 2022.

“Our greatest asset is our people and we continue to attract the best and brightest with our competitive pay and benefits package which starts with ownership. We offer employees the opportunity to receive equity during their employment and share in the success of Tesla. As of December 31, 2022, our full-time count for our and our subsidiaries' employees worldwide was 127,855, a 29,000 year over year increase.”

Tesla is currently ramping up production at its new factories, Giga Texas and Giga Berlin, where it aims to hire more than 10,000 people each. In addition, the company is expanding production at its old factories, as the production of new products such as batteries and Semi trucks, as well as the increase in production capacity for existing products, constantly require an increase in the number of employees. One thing is certain, Tesla is growing, which means that in the future, the company will continue to provide hundreds of thousands more jobs around the world.
