Tesla is looking to expand production at Giga Berlin, for which it needs additional land. The company has already received permission to purchase 100 hectares of land and must now submit a development plan. Local authorities expect this to happen before early 2024.
Tesla plans to expand its Grünheide production site near Berlin, for which it will need additional land. According to the rules, the company must draw up a development plan before it can start building. The mayor of Oder-Spree, Arne Christiani, believes the development plan can be drawn up by Q1 2024. However: “For this, everything has to work very well,” he told the German Press Agency (via Automobilwoche). The municipality is currently awaiting relevant information from the responsible planning departments. Then representatives of the public interest will be included, and their statements will then have to be evaluated.
Tesla wants to build its own freight depot, logistics areas, and the company's kindergarten in the additional area, as the existing site is not enough for this. In December, the municipal council of Grünheide voted by a majority vote in favor of drawing up a new development plan. After that, the company was allowed to buy an additional plot of more than 100 hectares.
Economy Minister Jörg Steinbach expects further impetus for local economic development during the expansion. Tesla plans to expand the factory at the existing site to extend production, but the timetable for this is not yet clear. The expansion requires a new environmental permit from the state of Brandenburg, but so far no application from the company has been received, Environment Ministry spokeswoman Frauke Zelt said.
Giga Berlin currently has at least 8,500 employees. In the first phase of expansion, at full production capacity, the factory should employ 12,000 employees.
