Tesla is celebrating a major milestone: the production of 20 million 4680 battery cells at Giga Texas. The milestone was reached less than four months after the factory announced the production of 10 million cells in June.

Tesla has entered new territory by developing a new battery cell design that is different from anything on the market today. Tesla's mission is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy—and not just through its cars. “The three elements needed for a sustainable energy future are sustainable energy generation, energy storage, and sustainable transport, electric cars,” said Elon Musk. All three elements of a sustainable future are directly dependent on batteries. This is why Tesla has been so keen on developing its own battery cells that will be produced faster and cheaper and have more capacity.

Due to the increased size, the battery cell has five times more energy, provides 16% more range, and six times more power. It also reduces the dollar per kilowatt-hour cost of the battery by 14%. In 2021, Tesla faced difficulties in setting up large-scale production of the cell, which slowed its overall time to market. In February 2022, the company announced it had produced 1 million 4680 cells at its Fremont facility.

After launching Giga Texas in the spring of 2022, Tesla also began working on producing new cells locally. On June 17, 2023, the company announced it had reached production of 10 million of 4680 cells there. Less than four months later, Tesla doubled production to 20 million cells, which it shared via X.

This is an excellent milestone and shows that Tesla is rapidly ramping up production of the 4680 battery cells that are an important part of the company's plan. The manufacturer intends to equip Cybertruck with this type of battery in the future. Full mass production of the truck will not begin until 2024, according to Elon Musk, although first deliveries should be in 2023. During this time, Tesla will be able to significantly increase production of 4680 batteries to equip its cars with them.
