Tesla battery supplier CATL has received a second partial approval to commission a plant in Germany. The factory is about 200 miles from Giga Berlin and will start operations by the end of 2022.
Key Tesla Chinese battery supplier, Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), said on Wednesday it received a second partial approval to commission a new battery cell plant in Thuringia, Germany. The new location is the first CATL plant outside of China. Its initial capacity will be 8 GWh per year, and then it will be increased to 14 GWh. CATL said it is in the final stages of installing the machines in the factory. The manufacturer expects the first cells to roll off the assembly line by the end of 2022.
CATL has been Tesla's major supplier since 2020. The manufacturer's battery cells are used to produce Model 3 and Model Y. CATL's location in Germany is about 210 miles from Tesla Giga Berlin, which means that cell shipments must be quick and relatively inexpensive. At the moment, Tesla's German factory produces only Model Y Performance. However, the factory may later offer a wider selection, including the base Model Y, which uses CATL battery cells.
