Tesla announces massive R&D recruitment in Shanghai as expansion continues in the Chinese market. The manufacturer is looking for candidates in key areas: vehicle software, hardware design, power and energy engineering, battery management, and safety testing.
Tesla announced massive hiring of research and development (R&D) specialists in Shanghai as it continues to expand its presence in the Chinese market, Global Times reported. Tesla China posted the announcement on Monday on its official WeChat account. Recruitment will take place in key areas such as vehicle software, hardware design, power and energy engineering, battery management, and safety testing. All positions are located in Shanghai, where Tesla's R&D center is located.
In October 2021, Tesla completed the R&D and innovation center and its Gigafactory data center in Shanghai, demonstrating commitment and respect for Chinese business requirements despite tensions between China and the US in a variety of areas. As Tesla's first overseas vehicle-based R&D center, it includes teams of software, hardware, electronics, materials, and energy development. The R&D center houses a total of 28 laboratories. At this stage, it focuses on developing Tesla's software, hardware, process and technology in China. It is also involved in application customization and standardized testing in the Chinese market, and is involved in global AI machine learning.
The laboratories have already made an important contribution to the development of Tesla by creating new processes and technologies that will be applied at Giga Berlin and Giga Texas. In addition, local experts have made significant contributions to the manufacturer's ability to tackle the global chip shortage. In the future, Tesla’s Shanghai R&D center will also carry out more original development on complete vehicles, charging equipment, and energy products, gradually reaching the same scale as the US R&D center. Therefore, the expanded involvement of new specialists indicates that Tesla continues to advance and develop in this direction.
China is currently the second-largest market for Tesla, accounting for 24.8% of the company's revenue. The manufacturer earned $4.65 billion in China in the first quarter of this year, up 52.8% from last year, per its earnings report. According to the company's plans, Giga Shanghai will continue to expand to produce two million vehicles per year.
