Motortrend: Tesla Model Y Remains an Impressive Achievement

Tesla Model Y is an impressive, well-rounded vehicle. Its combination of performance and cost makes it the best EV in its class. Motorotrend has compared Model Y to other cars in the same class and is convinced of this.

For the test, the 2020 Tesla Model Y Dual Motor Long Range was used. The tests took place at California Speedway in a fully instrumented vehicle.

In testing, the Model Y Dual Motor Long Range hit 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. That's just a tenth slower than the Jaguar I-Pace and a full second quicker than the Audi e-Tron, both of which are substantially more expensive. The all-electric, sophisticated beast will cover the quarter-mile in just 12.4 seconds at 114.8 mph, slightly ahead of Jaguar and well-clear of the Audi.

The low center of gravity provided by the underfloor batteries gives Model Y excellent handling. On the test, the car wears fairly pedestrian, mildly sporty Continental ProContact RX all-season tires on its 19-inch wheels. However, Model Y still pulled a respectable 0.86 average lateral g on the skidpad and put down a 25.2-second lap of Figure Eight course at 0.75 average lateral g. A comparison of the data shows that Model Y about equalled the Jaguar in this test, and was far ahead of the Audi.

It was the same story in the braking category. Long Range required 118 feet to stop from 60 mph, which is pretty solid--a few feet behind the Jaguar, which stopped in 112 feet. Audi was again significantly behind--or ahead, depending how you look at it--requiring 128 feet to stop.

It is worth noting that the version of Model Y tested is the current base model, which is focused on optimizing efficiency. Not surprisingly, Model Y Performance would show significantly enhanced performance for all these categories, especially in handling and braking.

At $49,990, the Long Range is a bargain when compared to anything else in the electric luxury SUV market. Jaguar, Audi, and Mercedes can't touch this price-point.

With Tesla, owners buy more than just a car: they have access to a worldwide proprietary Supercharging infrastructure and continuous wireless software updates that improve their vehicle.

"Model Y remains an impressive achievement for Tesla all around."
