Tesla Model 3s have been added to Dubai's taxi fleet as the manufacturer's vehicles performed well in a test run launched in 2017. Dubai aims to make 90% of its taxi fleet environmentally friendly by 2030.
The emirate's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that it has added Tesla Model 3s to Dubai Taxi Corporation, according to itp.net (via Drive Tesla). The cars of the American manufacturer have proven themselves perfectly and have proven their worth in use, which became evident during the tests. Thus, since 2017, Dubai Taxi Corporation has already included 172 Tesla vehicles in its limousine service.
RTA began operating Tesla vehicles in 2017 with the receipt of 50 Model S and Model X. “Model (S) has garnered the largest possible rating of safety at the time of launch as it can cover the longest distance among electric vehicles. Besides its performance & facilities, Model (X) has a unique feature as it is fitted with falcon-wing doors, a panoramic windshield, a seven-seat configuration that provides an unprecedented level of comfort, and maneuverability,” then explained Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.
This project was launched in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to turn Dubai into the ‘smartest’ city in the world, as well as the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative and Dubai Smart Autonomous Mobility Strategy aimed at converting a quarter of all total journeys into driverless ones by 2030.
“The usage of Tesla electric vehicles in Dubai taxi fleet…supports the Dubai Government’s energy and low carbon strategy aimed to make Dubai a model to be emulated in the efficient use of energy and reduced carbon emission,” said Al Tayer.
To date, Dubai Taxi Corporation consists of 80 Tesla Model S, 50 Tesla Model X, and 42 Tesla Model 3 cars. The RTA stated that all of these vehicles have demonstrated positive operational performance, especially in terms of zero carbon emissions and a high customer satisfaction score. This success has spurred them to adopt eco-friendly vehicles more widely.
“The success of that experiment prompts us to widen the scope of using electric vehicles as part of the Dubai Taxi fleet over the coming years. It supports the initiative of converting 90 percent of the limo fleet in Dubai into eco-friendly vehicles by 2026. The initiative is the first of its kind worldwide in adopting a semi-total transformation of limousines into environmentally-friendly vehicles,” Al Tayer added.
