Humanity has not returned to the moon in 50 years, SpaceX is working to land NASA astronauts on the lunar surface by 2024. The agency awarded SpaceX a $2.9 billion Artemis Human Landing System (HLS) contract to develop a lunar-optimized Crew Starship. Before returning NASA astronauts on the moon, SpaceX first crewed mission will take civilians on a journey around the moon in 2023. The mission known as ‘Dear Moon’, is privately-funded by Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa.
SpaceX is designing a spacecraft capable of transporting 100 passengers on long-duration voyages. Starship is under development at the Starbase facility in Boca Chica Beach, Texas, where engineers have already test-launched multiple stainless-steel Starship prototypes. SpaceX is now getting ready to launch the first full-scale Starship launch vehicle to orbit. They target to conduct the orbital test flight before this year ends.
SpaceX seeks to hire engineers to work on Life Support Systems for Crew Starship. “[...] Leveraging the lessons learned from our flight proven Dragon spacecraft and Falcon rocket, Starship will usher in the next era of manned spaceflight and exploration, ultimately allowing us to establish permanent communities on the Moon, Mars, and beyond,” they state in the new job application. “As a Life Support Systems Engineer at SpaceX, you will have the opportunity to utilize your knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop novel solutions at the cutting edge of space technology,” the company said. “This team develops the necessary hardware to maintain environmental and thermal control as well as support life onboard the Starship spacecraft. This role is a challenging role, as it involves design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of components that are absolutely critical to the safety of future astronauts and passengers.”
The company also seeks to hire a Mechanical Engineer to work alongside the HLS Starship development team. “Mechanical Engineers on this team are the true hardware owners - they are responsible for full life cycle development starting from initial system architecting and concepts all the way through the design, analysis, prototype, and qualification phases,” the company says in the job application’s description.
