- Ford said it will add even more Tesla Superchargers to its network.
- The addition of more than 15,000 Superchargers comes as part of a planned 25% expansion of BlueOval's North American charging network.
Ford Motor said Monday it will add more Tesla Superchargers to its electric vehicle charging network. This is higher than previously predicted. The company said it would add more than 15,000 Tesla Superchargers, up from a previous forecast of 12,000 chargers. That is, the total number of charging points in the Tesla Network that Ford electric vehicle owners can use has increased by 3,000 units.
Ford said it will expand its BlueOval charging network in North America by 25% to more than 106,000 chargers. These will include more than 11,800 fast-charging stations and more than 15,000 Tesla Superchargers. The expansion to the Tesla network will occur in the spring of 2024.
Adding more chargers brings noticeable appeal to Ford's electric vehicles. Access to charging stations has always been considered one of the most important problems that must be solved before electric vehicles can replace internal combustion engine vehicles. Now, one of the obstacles to buying a battery-powered car will be overcome.
With the expansion to 106,000 charging points, Ford also said customers can access three new charger providers: Francisco Energy, Blink, and Red E in the US and Canada with built-in charger routing and easy payment options through FordPass. These three suppliers will add more than 10,000 new chargers to the network, including more than 550 new DC fast chargers.
BlueOval brings together multiple charging networks to provide access to the largest public charging network in North America offered by vehicle manufacturers. It includes providers such as Shell Recharge Solutions, Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint. This comes a few months after Ford struck a deal with Tesla. The collaboration between competitors also made Ford the first major automaker to adopt Tesla's charging standard.
