Elon Musk Removes the Difference Between Verified Twitter Accounts by 'killing' the 'official' Designation

Elon Musk removes the difference between verified accounts on Twitter, “killing” the “official” designation. Soon, in the account information of each previously verified account, an explanation will appear: “Legacy Verified. Could be notable, but could also be bogus.”

Elon Musk continues to make changes to Twitter. The platform said last week that all of its users, who previously could not get the blue tick as privileged accounts, will now be able to access it through a paid monthly subscription. Musk criticized the pre-existing verification system, saying that the “lords & peasants system” is “bullshit.”

While everyone who pays to subscribe to Twitter Blue get blue checkmarks and access to attractive features, those accounts that were verified prior to Musk's purchase of the social network were to receive “official” designation in their accounts. However, just a few hours after launch, the additional badge disappeared. The new owner explained that he “killed” the new “official” designation. Later, during a Twitter Advertisers Meeting held Wednesday on Twitter Spaces, Musk said that the “official” badge was “simply another way of creating a two-class system” and “wasn’t addressing the core problem.”

A few hours after the meeting, Musk added that some accounts that passed more detailed verification would still receive additional badges. In the coming days, Twitter will add granularity to accounts with “organizational affiliation” or “ID verification” to let other Twitter users know they are verified at a deeper level.

In addition, the changes will affect the account information that appears when you click on the blue tick. At the moment, accounts that have received a blue tick for a paid subscription to Twitter Blue have the description “This account is verified because it's subscribed to Twitter Blue.” Accounts that have been verified by ID or organization have the description “This account is verified because it's notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.” But, soon the description of such verified accounts will be “Legacy Verified. Could be notable, but could also be bogus.” It should be kept in mind that some of the existing verified accounts are indeed a scam or fake and bought blue ticks for thousands of dollars from unscrupulous Twitter workers who sold them before Musk bought the platform. Therefore, Musk's proposed explanation perfectly reflects reality. Please note that the wording is subject to change.
