Elon Musk met with the chairman of CATL, possibly to discuss the supply of battery cells for energy storage batteries and/or building a joint battery factory in the US. The meeting took place as part of Musk's visit to China but was not announced.
On May 30, Tesla CEO Musk arrived in China and met with the country's top officials in Beijing. He met with the Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China and the Minister of Commerce, after meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China. On Tuesday, a photo of him meeting with Robin Zeng, chairman of CATL, the world's leading battery manufacturer, surfaced online, The Paper reported. The photo shows them walking side by side in the lobby of the hotel and talking about something.
The meeting between Musk and Zeng could have included discussions on the supply of battery cells for energy storage batteries, Megapack, which will be manufactured at Giga Shanghai, industry analysts said. In addition, they could have discussed future cooperation in building a battery factory in North America to take advantage of the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
In April, Tesla announced it was investing in building the world's second Megapack plant in Shanghai. According to the plan, the company will purchase lithium iron phosphate batteries from CATL, which will be used for Megapack production.
