Brussels MP has become the first European politician to convert his salary into Bitcoin. With this move, he wants to generate interest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies among the population.
Christophe De Beukelaer, MP for the Brussels-Capital Region, has volunteered to receive his salary in Bitcoin, according to Bruzz. “I am the first in Europe, but not in the world, who wants to draw attention to cryptocurrencies with this step,” he said. “New York Mayor Eric Adams spent three months collecting his salary in bitcoin to make New York a bitcoin hub. I think it’s not too late for Brussels and Belgium to play a leading role in the cryptocurrency industry.”
De Beukelaer will receive the equivalent of €5,500 in Bitcoin per month. Euros will be converted to Bitcoin through the Belgian cryptocurrency trading platform Bit4You. With this action, the MP wants to show his confidence in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and wants to encourage economic and political actors to show interest in the blockchain and stimulate a deep understanding of the monetary system.
Last week, New York Mayor Eric Adams revealed that he had converted his two-week salary into Bitcoin and Ethereum. He told CNN last Sunday that he is a long-term investor: “When you are a long-term investor, you don't keep your eyes on your portfolio.”
