Itaú Unibanco is Brazil's first Bank to connect to SpaceX’s Starlink network

Itaú Unibanco, one of Brazil's leading banks, has become the first financial institution in the country to embark on testing connections to SpaceX’s Starlink network. The bank initiated these tests in March at one of its branches located in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. They installed the Starlink service after they partnered with SC Caprock, the Brazilian division of the Speedcast group. Speedcast is an authorized Starlink dealer.

The aim of the testing is to assess how this innovative satellite technology could improve internet connectivity standards in areas of Brazil, particularly those situated far from “large urban centers.” Fábio Napoli, the Technology Director at Itaú Unibanco, highlighted the potential of low-orbit satellite connectivity in regions where traditional internet and communications infrastructures are lacking. “With connectivity via low-orbit satellites, our goal is to test how the solution can help us maintain a high-quality connection in regions that are difficult to access through traditional infrastructure,” he stated in a press release. The implementation of the Starlink network, which relies on signals from low-orbiting satellites rather than physical fiber-optic cabling, holds the promise of delivering a consistent and high-quality internet connection across all of Brazil, benefiting both employees and customers of the bank.

Napoli further emphasized, “This evolution accelerates our focus on uniting the agility of the digital environment with the convenience of physical service to offer the best experience to our customers throughout Brazil. In terms of connectivity, the low-orbit satellite behaves similarly to fiber optics, but with the difference of being more malleable and easy to deploy, which means that there is great potential for its use in a country with a territorial dimension like Brazil,” they said.

Paulo Bigal, the Commercial Director of SC Caprock, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with Itaú Unibanco, highlighting its disruptive nature and potential to revolutionize internet access across Brazil. “This Starlink corporate solution allows you to meet all the bank's applications, in addition to enabling the easy installation of terminals in all Brazilian regions, including the most isolated locations, which do not have satisfactory broadband connectivity,” stated Bigal. They said that with local support and Starlink's corporate services, Itaú Unibanco would be able to provide high-speed satellite connectivity at any branch in the country.

Itaú Unibanco's decision to test connections to the Starlink network demonstrates its commitment to harnessing cutting-edge technology to enhance its services and ensure a seamless banking experience for customers nationwide. As the trials progress, the bank and its partners will continue to explore the possibilities offered by low-orbit satellite connectivity, potentially revolutionizing the way financial institutions operate and improving internet access for communities in remote areas of Brazil.
