The European plugin market in August is showing stellar results. Tesla Model 3 sales continue to gain momentum and is now the top-selling vehicle in the European EV market in August.

Last month, more than 97,000 plug-ins were registered in Europe, 50,232 units (+112% YoY) of which belong to BEV. Tesla Model 3 became the bestseller, overtaking its closest competitor by more than 800 units, selling 7,020 units.

The closest competitor, Renault Zoe, took 2nd place with 6,183 registrations. The Ford Kuga PHEV had 5,055 sales, the Hyundai Kona EV sold 4,054, and the Mercedes A250e cape in 5th with 3,505 units, EV-sales reports.

The main markets for the Model 3 were Germany (2,824 units), the UK (950), and the Netherlands (609). And as good as these numbers are, September should be even hotter for the company.

In the ranking of sales for the year, Tesla Model 3 ranks 2nd, selling 41,047 vehicles, compared with the leading, more affordable Renault Zoe, which registered 52,150 units in 2020. However, there is a high likelihood that in September the leaderboard could change significantly.

Among midsize sedans in 2020, Tesla is a truly untouchable leader. The Tesla Model 3, with 41,047 vehicles, sold 35,201 more units than its closest competitor, the Jaguar i-Pace, which sold only 5,846 vehicles. Last month, Model 3 sales were up 29% YoY, so competition will continue to be in its rearview for the foreseeable future.
