Tesla achieved strong performance in the first four months of 2021 in China. Remaining one of the most active EV manufacturers in the country, Model 3 and Model Y entered the Top 5 best-selling new energy vehicles.

In 2021, Tesla produced 80,951 vehicles at Giga Shanghai, selling only two car models. From January to April (inclusive), the company sold 59,122 Model 3s, making the model the second best-selling new energy vehicle in the country. Also, 21,829 Model Ys were sold, which allowed it to take an honorable fifth place in the overall ranking.

It should be noted that of all the Top 5, only BYD Han EV, which sold 27,099 units and is in third place, is approximately in the same price range as Tesla cars. In turn, the tiny Wuling Hongguang Mini EV and Euler Black Cat are in a completely different price segment, under $10,000. The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV (around $4,500) sold 99,090 vehicles during this period and finished in first place. Euler Black Cat (around $9,200) sold 23,791 vehicles and finished in fourth place. This is an important factor since the production and sale of small and cheap cars is much easier than selling cars from the more expensive segment.

In addition, Tesla's production and sales figures in April suffered a two-week shutdown of Model Y production. This impacted the company's cumulative sales, both in April and in the first four months of 2021. Nevertheless, even with this factored in, Tesla has achieved great success in the largest automotive market in the world. All of the cars they make in China are in within the top five best-selling electric vehicles, which is really important. Despite the affordability of cheaper models from Chinese manufacturers, they still cannot offer decent cars in the luxury segment. This means that Tesla will remain the number one choice for those considering buying a higher class EV.
