Elon Musk donated $5 million to the Khan Academy through his Musk Foundation, which provides philanthropy in several areas, including education. The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was very grateful for the generous donation that will serve the purposes of the organization.

Khan Academy is an American non-profit educational organization created in 2008 by Sal Khan, with the goal of creating a set of online tools that help educate students. The organization produces short lessons in the form of videos. Its website also includes supplementary practice exercises and materials for educators. All resources are available for free to users of the website and application. The Khan Academy mission is to provide free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.

The Musk Foundation is a private charitable foundation founded in 2002 by Elon Musk and his brother, Kimbal. The Foundation provides grants in support of several areas:

  • Renewable energy research and advocacy
  • Human space exploration research and advocacy
  • Pediatric research
  • Science and engineering education
  • Development of safe artificial intelligence to benefit humanity

However, the Foundation is not limited to helping only in these areas, and has repeatedly helped those who are in dire need. The Foundation has donated to non-political causes, including $480,000 in grants for water filtration in Flint, Michigan and $424,000 to supply laptop computers to Flint middle-schools. Other recipients of Musk Foundation grants include international aid nonprofits such as Doctors Without Borders, healthcare organizations such as World Spine Care, and the co-educational Mirman School for Gifted Children also have received aid. Artists for Peace and Justice, which helps disadvantaged people internationally through education, and the Haitian Relief Organization--which helped with recovery in Haiti after a tsunami struck that nation--received funding from the Musk Foundation in 2011. The foundation also helped those who suffered from hurricane Laura in Louisiana, in August 2020.

These donations, along with Musk's activities, perfectly demonstrate his true intentions and sincere love for people and those in need. He does not buy himself expensive houses, yachts, and exotic islands, but he directs all his funds to the development of his companies that seek to help all of humanity. Tesla's goal is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, and as soon as possible improve the climate situation on Earth. SpaceX's goal is to make space exploration affordable, and make humans a multi-planetary species. Along the way, Musk is trying to solve a number of other human problems. Musk said:

"About half my money is intended to help problems on Earth & half to help establish a self-sustaining city on Mars to ensure continuation of life (of all species) in case Earth gets hit by a meteor like the dinosaurs or WW3 happens & we destroy ourselves."
